Penylan is a district in the north of Cardiff. Known for its Victorian era period houses and spacious tree lined roads and avenues. Situated to both the north and south of the A48 dual carriageway, it is one of the most affluent districts of Cardiff, although subdivision of the large Victorian period properties is starting to occur in the areas at the south end of the ward, mimicking the trend in neighbouring Plasnewydd.
Penylan has a number of large parks, including the southern part of Roath Park, and is one of the greenest areas in Cardiff. It is also known for its very strong sense of community, largely due to the parks, road layouts, churches, and local post offices and newsagents.
Despite the closing of the local synagogue (which moved to nearby Cyncoed), Penylan retains the largest Jewish population of Cardiff, which although well down on its heyday, numbers about 350 (just over 35% of the population) out of approximately 1000 in the entire city.
