Pontprennau – the “newest suburb of Cardiff” (welsh for Bridge of Trees – as in ‘wooden bridges’) was originally an area mainly comprising several farms. Designated back in the 1970’s for residential development it has expanded greatly since the early 1990’s.
Situated North East of Cardiff City centre, Pontprennau is flanked by Lisvane to the West, and Cyncoed and Pentwyn to the South.
With easy access just off J30 on the M4 (developed specifically for the area) the area today comprises mainly of private residential dwellings.
As you exit the motorway at J30 and travel South you are first met by Cardiff Gate Services and Cardiff Gate International Business Park.
The services are currently owned and operated by Welcomebreak.
The business park comprises 100 acres of prime office facilities which house such companies as HBOS, Coca Cola, International Baccalaureate and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to name a few. In addition to the office facilities the park hosts the Ibis Hotel, The Toby Carvery and Cardiff Audi.
As you continue South towards the residential area of Pontprennau you are next met by Cardiff Gate Retail Park – 150,000 sq ft of retail space. Current stores include companies such as B&Q, Asda, DFS, SCS and McDonalds.
The UK Census 2001 reports that there were 8,037 residents living in 3,267 houses in Pontprennau. However these figures have increased substantially with the development of further homes since then.
